Requirements to obtain a Virginia Learner's Permit:
*Students must be 15 years and 6 months of age
*Pass the following tests at the DMV (Vision test, 100% on Signs Identification test, 80% on General Knowledge test)
Requirements to obtain a Virginia Driver's License:
*Students must possess their Learner's Permit for 9 months if under the age of 19; Students 19 years of age may possess their permit for 60 days, then test out at DMV; behind the wheel is not required for students 19 years of age.
*Students must have 45 hours of supervised driving with a parent/guardian, of which 15 hours must be after sunset.
*Students must have 36 seat hours of driver education. This course is taught at Smithfield High. At the completion of the 36 hour requirement, students will receive their "Green Card," certificate of completion, which is necessary to sign up for behind the wheel.
*Students must take Behind the Wheel training. This consists of 7 sessions of driving and 7 sessions of observation.
